Vacation in the USSR

A show of Soviet Tourism posters is closing this weekend at the Gallery for Russian Arts and Design in London. A slideshow of posters from the show is available at CNN.com. There is some cognitive dissonance, from a western perspective, in the idea of a tourist agency for a closed society. This exhibition serves as a reminder of the astonishing size and variation of the Soviet landscape. Even today the Soviet Union is referred to interchangeably as “Russia” (See CNN article linked above) and yet the USSR covered more than a sixth of the world’s land area and encompassed extraordinary ethnic, cultural and linguistic diversity.

From the exhibition website:

“The exhibition explores political and stylistic differences between Soviet internal and propaganda of 1930s through early Intourist posters, ephemera and agittextiles.”
